My Venture with the South American Dwarf Cichlid
I started keeping the South American Cichlid - Apistogramma on 2001 when i first step into a local fish shop - SAM YICK Aquarium, there located at the SIMEI EAST POINT shopping center of Singapore. The owner - Joey with great patience showed me on all the interesting behaviour of this small cichlid. From then, i had continued in this long journey to the SA Dwarf cichlid collection till now. I had always been attracted to them and had once collected near to 40 species of these. Till now, i am still collecting them from my various trips up to Taiwan, Japan or Germany.
apistogramma & other South American cichlids
Apistogramma and other SA dwarf cichlids are the most popular dwarf cichlids that come in a array of colors, exhibit lots of impressive characters and can usually be kept in a community aquarium or individual breeding tank concepts. They are found in the South America. South American (SA) dwarfs cichlids include Apistogramma, Apistogrammoides, Biotoecus, Crenicara, Dicrossus, Laetacara, Nannacara, Microgeophagus & Taeniacara. Apistogramma made up of the largest group than all the others as combined – contributes about 60+ species.
The information in keeping & breeding Apistogrammas and other dwarf cichlids includes sections on foods & feeding, aquarium set up, aquarium maintenance, aquarium plants, fish health and much more. Our main problem with these Dwarf cichlids is finding them as they are not usually found in most aquarium shops. In Singapore, they are rarely imported & usually only the more common species which are farm bred & supplied. Quality dwarf cichlids usually come with very high cost as some hobbyist guys got to mass order through major importer from overseas e.g. USA & Germany; some even made trips to countries that Japan, Taiwan or Hong Kong where more wild caught or quality bred specimens can be found.
